Where:

Classes for the New York Hot Jazz Camp take place at the Greenwich House Music School, 46 Barrow Street, NY NY 10014

What to expect:

Our goal is to provide instruction to musicians of all skill levels, who want to further their knowledge in the styles of traditional/classic jazz in a positive and supportive environment. The curriculum pulls from jazz's inception in New Orleans through its journey to New York and Chicago in the 1920s and '30s and subsequent West Coast stylings.

A maximum of 48 students will be accepted to camp, 6 on each instrument. Students will be arranged into bands for the week to build a repertoire which they will perform at a reputable jazz club at the conclusion of camp.  Everyone will be encouraged and expected to improvise a solo at the final concert. Daily workshops will include discussions on topics such as improvising techniques, the history of jazz, stage presence/etiquette, how to organize your own band to perform, and how to get paid for it!

Monday afternoon we will begin camp with a meet and greet, followed by a group jam. Classes Tuesday-Friday will take place from 10 am - 5pm daily.  A catered lunch will be provided on-site.  We will offer optional off-site afternoon and evening group jams and activities for sightseeing in New York as well as recommend nighttime concerts that feature hot jazz. Click HERE to visit the "NYC Trad Jazz and Swing" Facebook page. Saturday will include a group field trip as well as a dress-rehearsal for Sunday's concert.

A Message from the Founders:

Both of us share a love of this music that was instilled early on, largely through attending jazz camps. It was there we found inspiration and garnered a deep appreciation for the sounds, stylings and music created by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Jack Teagarden, Kid Ory, Johnny Dodds, Benny Goodman, Earl Hines, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Eddie Lang, Johnny St. Cyr, Pops Foster, Gene Krupa, Baby Dodds, Bessie Smith and many other jazz greats.  We can't wait for you to learn from and interact with today's top jazz artists, whom we have selected as our world-class faculty!

The Greenwich House Music School is a historic and picturesque place in the heart of Greenwich Village, Manhattan. We fell in love with this venue and the people who run it, and we know you will too. It is a full-time music school dedicated to sharing music with youth and we're thrilled to be partnered for this venture.

Thank you for supporting the camp, live music, and we look forward to meeting you :)

Sincerely,

Molly Ryan and Bria Skonberg
